Chazz Malott is an emerging lighting designer, currently working towards his MFA at Carnegie Mellon University. Before graduate school, he could be found on the side some South American road cursing and attempting to fix his motorcycle.

While working on a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from the University of Michigan, Chazz simultaneously designed main stage plays and operas for the university’s Department of Music, Theatre and Dance. He worked professionally as a software engineer for four years writing financial trading servers and smartphone apps and filled his need for creativity by designing for Chicago’s storefront theatres. In 2016 he decided to leave corporate life to spend some time travelling before continuing his education.

Though Chazz enjoys designing plays, operas, dance, and concerts, his favorite projects are new musicals. He has worked on multiple Chicago and world premiers for musicals and enjoys the challenge of creating a new world and choreographing lighting with actors and music.

When Chazz finds free time, he likes to go for a ride on his motorcycle or try a new brewery.
